EPS Young Talent: Marinus Gouw
Talent cannot be taken for granted. We can’t repeat that enough! So when you have the honor to work with an entire group of young talents, then you are of course very proud of that. That is why we will randomly and weekly introduce an EPS Talent to you. This week we proudly present Service Engineer Marinus Gouw, 27 years old.
Marinus, why did you choose EPS at the time? “Well, EPS was the first company that seriously responded to my internship application, so you get the sense that they really want you. And more importantly: after the internship period they immediately offered me a job!”
He is a Service Engineer and mainly works on location with customers, which means a being a lot on the road. “You are often busy solving seal issues, this can be on an inland vessel, sea-going vessel or tank terminal. We also design and make new pump parts in-house in Oud-Gastel, which I then install,” Marinus explains.
“The satisfaction you get when you successfully complete a job makes it really fun for me. I take a lot of pride in my role, especially if when it is a project abroad and you are therefore virtually on your own. Of course, the project has been well prepared and there is remote guidance, but you really have to do it yourself.” Marinus then adds: “What I also like about my work is when you design and produce pump parts in the workshop yourself that then function flawlessly, that is really wonderful.”
Are there parts of your job that can sometimes be difficult? Marinus thinks for a moment. “If outdoor jobs unexpectedly run late, you will be expected to spend a few extra hours completing them so that a ship or tank terminal can continue operating again. This sometimes has an impact on your own private planning, of course. As Service Engineers, we also have a rotating 24-hour emergency call, so you will sometimes have to adjust your own private agenda accordingly, but you know well in advance when you have such a shift.”
Marinus explains that the irregularity is not such a problem for him: “Of course, if you have something planned and you indicate this in time, the guys that do the preparation and planning of the projects will take this into account. “
What advice do you have for other talents your age when it comes to choosing an employer and a job? Marinus laughs a bit and says: “Go do something you like. I studied mechanical engineering at MBO 4 and then you quickly end up in an office position, but I absolutely prefer to work in practice!”
